Eddie Aikau Invitational 3
Eddie Aikau Invitational 3
Twin surfers 🏄 at The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational
I was so happy & lucky to be able to see it! It was supposed to happen the week before but the winds were not good so it was pushed a few days just as I got to Oahu.
Eddie Aikau is the most famous lifeguard and I’m pretty sure the best : he saved more than 500 people! He was also a great surfer, playing with the giant waves of Waimea Bay. Unfortunately, on a voyage aboard the Hokule’a, there was a leak so Eddie left with his surfboard to get help… never to be seen again. He was 31!
His family created the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational in his honor and memory. It does not happen every year as the waves need to be 30ft / 9m or higher.
So you understand why I was so happy to be able to see it! It was the first since 2016!
